Led Zeppelin: The Gods of Rock

Led Zeppelin were a bunch of British lads who basically invented loud. Formed in 1968, the band featured Robert Plant(the golden god of vocals), Jimmy Page (wizard on guitar and founder), John Paul Jones (the quiet genius on bass and keys), and John Bonham (the human thunderstorm on drums).

They started out nicking blues riffs and turning them up to eleven, but quickly evolved into something bigger—mixing rock, folk, mysticism, and a frankly worrying amount of dragon imagery. Their fourth album didn’t even have a title—just a bunch of symbols—but it gave the world Stairway to Heaven, Black Dog, and Rock and Roll, so everyone forgave them.

By the mid-’70s, Zeppelin were the biggest band on the planet: private jets, sold-out stadiums, and hotel bills that made accountants cry. Then tragedy struck in 1980 when Bonham passed away, and the band called it quits rather than carry on without him (a classy move, really).

They’ve reunited a few times—most famously in 2007 with Bonham’s son behind the kit—but never for long. Still, their music lives on, blasting out of pub jukeboxes, car stereos, and every guitarist’s practice amp from here to Valhalla.

Simply put: Led Zeppelin didn’t just play rock. They were rock.
